Welcome to this database which tries to create some insight to malware.
It tries to put information from all known infections and antivirus creators into one place so you can compare names and results.
At present the database contains:
| Virus descriptions | 784654 |
|---|---|
| Unique samples detected | 45159 |
| 'in-the-wild' samples tested | 30 |
| Antivirus Manufacturers | 26 |
| Scanners tested (so far) | 22 |
Relative score per manufacturer
Accuracy (or the lack of …)
Please note that the sample database contains a lot of old virus samples which some of the newer AV tools do not care about. Some scanners do not care about stuff like jokes or construction kits. Most do not care about phishing email message files. So about 5% of the samples may not be detected for valid reasons.
Another point to take into account is that there are relative few samples which classify as 'in-the-wild'. (The formal list contain more samples which are reported as global 'in-the-wild' samples.) Most manufacturers claim 100% scores on these but I have at present no means to verify that statement. (If you have samples of them feel free to send them in.)
Then there is the fact that the archive is not yet fully organized.
Finaly: The date stamps on the samples are at present rather inaccurate. Many of them have not been properly recorded at all.
On the other hand:
The wildlist is published rather late. The March 2006 edition was published only late in May 2006. So any scanner which is not able to get 100% on that is not doing well.
Similar I think any product which can not detect at least 75% of the samples here is not up to the task. If you are looking into buying a new virus scanner or about to extend your upgrade contract you may take at least some notice on these results before you lay your money down.
Enjoy
Enjoy the facility and safe computing to all of you,
Hugo.
